A roundup of recent news

Errors on memory and thinking tests could signal Alzheimer’s disease up to 18 years before diagnosis, according to a new study from Rush University researchers. While a study out of Washington University shows that by studying brain scans and cerebrospinal fluid of healthy adults, scientists have shown that changes in Alzheimer’s biomarkers during midlife may help identify who will develop the disease years later.

Rush University researchers also released a study published in the journal of the American Academy of Neurology showing that Alzheimer’s disease may cause different changes in the brain in African-Americans than in white Americans of European descent.

A 12-year study out of Taiwan shows that the risk of developing dementia is related to the severity of diabetes complications.

Cities are reinventing themselves to become “dementia friendly” by educating shopkeepers and others to better learn how to interact with people with dementia.

The Alzheimer’s Association International Conference was held this week and researchers say a new generation of drugs currently in development could help those who experience Alzheimer’s and other brain disorders.
