Age is the biggest risk factor for forgetfulness – and this can be perfectly normal, says Dr. Thomas Loepfe, a geriatrician with the Mayo Clinic Health System. But a new study in the American Academy of Neurology is making him reconsider just how normal it is after finding that study participants reporting memory problems at the beginning of the study were more likely to have dementia later on.

A new study links drugs widely prescribed for insomnia and anxiety to Alzheimer’s disease. Over cumulative days of use, the higher the risk of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis later in life, said Dr. Antoine Parienta, an epidemiologist at the University of Bordeaux and a co-author of the study told a New York Times blog.

Medical advances have helped extend the life of people with Down syndrome, but adults with the syndrome are at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, reports the Chicago Tribune.

A simple test combining movement and thinking can help detect an increased risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease, even before there are any signs of dementia, say scientists at York University in Toronto.
