Experts Forecast the Next Decade in Senior Living
Seven major themes emerged from responses to an Argentum survey designed to develop a snapshot of senior living operators, challenges and opportunities in the year 2025.
Senior living leaders forecast that: resident expectations will change; the industry will produce more quality metrics; dementia supports and services will expand; workforce challenges will spur innovations in professional development; senior living will face increasing cost and service demand; technology advances will improve the resident, family and staff experience: and more education will be needed to encourage Americans to save for long term care.
Senior Living Executive magazine spoke with experts to get their insights on just what might be the sentiment behind those themes.
Victor Regnier, a well-known expert in senior living design, says: “We need more emphasis on people and less on things and services,” when it comes to changing resident expectations.
Argentum has been seeking to address the need for quality metrics through the launch of professional standards for senior living operators, complementing the state laws and regulations governing the senior living industry, as outlined in an interview with Discern Health’s Guy D’Andrea who is helping Argentum develop those standards.
Edwin Walker, the acting assistant secretary for aging at the Administration for Community Living, says the nation; is challenged bymisconceptions among consumers that Medicare pays for extended care and more education is needed on the issue as well as saving for long term care in general. Bickford Senior Living Executive Vice President of Operations, Alan Fairbanks, sees programming innovations in memory care as a way to help address the need for expanded dementia services and supports.
