Holiday Hints: Alzheimer's Caregiving Tips from the National Institute on Aging
The National Institute on Aging offers holiday hints for caregivers of those who have Alzheimer’s disease. The tip sheet is available as an eBook and as a PDF. Information also is available in the publication Caring for a Person with Alzheimer’s Disease: Your Easy-to-Use Guide from the National Institute on Aging.
The institute suggests:
Set your own limits, and be clear about them with others. You don’t have to do everything you used to do.
Encourage friends and family to visit even if it’s difficult, but limit the number of visitors at any one time.
Explain to guests ahead of time that memory loss is the result of Alzheimer’s and is not intentional.
During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, be sure to take care of yourself. Guard against fatigue and find time for adequate rest.
Avoid crowds, changes in routine, and strange places that may make the person with Alzheimer’s feel confused or nervous.
Make sure there is a space where the person can rest when going to large gatherings.
