Millions of Adults Affected by Osteoporosis, Low Bone Mass
Approximately 54 million American adults age 50 and older are affected by osteoporosis and low bone mass, according to new data from the National Osteoporosis Foundation. Arizona and Nevada had the greatest projected increase in the number of older adults in this age bracket with these concerns, followed by Florida, New Hampshire and Utah.
The foundation study shows that about 10.2 million adults have osteoporosis and 43.4 million have low bone mass, revealing that more than 50% of the U.S. adult population is affected. NOF President Robert Gagel said the data show that it’s “more important than ever” to apply preventive measures early to protect patients with low bone mass from developing osteoporosis.
The study projects that by 2020, there will be 64.4 million adults age 50 and over with osteoporosis or low bone mass, which is a 29% increase from 2010. It’s also anticipated that the number of fractures will grow proportionately.
“This disease causes an estimated 2 million broken bones each year and often results in immobility, pain, placement in a nursing home, isolation and other health problems,” said NOF Executive Director and CEO Amy Porter, who added that Medicare pays for the cost for repair of 80% of broken bones that occur due to osteoporosis.
An estimated 8.2 million women and 2 million men have osteoporosis and about 27.3 million women and 16.1 million men have low bone mass. Most of the individuals are non-Hispanic white women although about 500,000 non-Hispanic blacks and 600,000 Mexican American adults have osteoporosis.
