Study: It’s Hip to Be 100
Centenarians make up a small but growing share of the world’s older population. Since 1990, the number of people 80 and older has grown more rapidly than those ages 65 to 79, attributed to improved life expectancies among those 65 and older.
Projections estimate there will be 3.7 million centenarians around the globe in 2050. While it can be hard to identify the exact age of many people in the centenarian bracket as many might not have birth records to verify their age, available data according to Pew Research shows the United States leads the world in the number of centenarians, followed by Japan, China, India and Italy.
Today there are 4.8 centenarians for every 10,000 people in Japan and 4.1 in Italy. The United States, which is aging at a slower rate than Italy and Japan due to higher fertility and immigration rates, shows 2.2 centenarians per 10,000 people.
By 2050, China is expected to have the largest centenarian population followed by Japan, United States, Italy and India.
