A panel of the Food and Drug Administration has voted to recommend approval of a new flu vaccine designed for older adults.
It would be the first seasonal influenza vaccine licensed for use in adults 65 and older.
The Centers for Disease Control this week also released its latest flu update, noting that the 2014-15 flu season was moderately several and especially severe for adults 65 and older with the virus peaking during late December and then February.
The CDC also recommends the three FDA-approved antiviral drugs, which are prescription drugs that can be used to treat flu illness, for people at high risk of serious flu complications such as very young children, adults 65 and older, pregnant women and people with certain medical conditions.
Doctors and nurses are encouraged to begin vaccinating as soon as the vaccines are available in their region. To find out availability, this flu clinic locators is available.
