Medigap: Offering More Coverage for Health Care Services

Medicare Supplemental Insurance or Medigap pays for health care costs and services that the Original Medicare does not cover. You may use this policy for coinsurance, co-payments, and deductibles.

Lighthouse Assisted Living Homes helps families choose the best health care services for their loved ones by providing information on different support programs available. We offer information on Medicaid, Medicare, and Medigap.

Additional Coverage
Having a Medigap supplemental insurance ensures that your loved one can afford health care services that Medicare does not cover.

Here are some of the things that the health insurance program administered by the federal government will not pay for:

• Coinsurance fees when the hospital stay of your loved one exceeds the limit

• Medical expenses incurred when traveling outside the country

• Yearly deductibles

• Coinsurance fees when your family member stays in a skilled nursing facility for more than 20 days

• Non-medical personal care services

• Preventive health care services and examinations

• Dental care

Eligibility
To qualify for Medigap, your loved one must have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. When your family member enrolls in Medicare Part B upon turning 65, they automatically qualify for a Medigap policy through the open enrollment period. Federal law prohibits insurance companies from denying these individuals from getting a policy for the next six months.

Lighthouse Assisted Living Homes and insurance experts recommend getting a Medigap policy within the open enrollment period, as it can be difficult to apply for it after six months. Most insurance companies assess the health risks of applicants, which is higher for older applicants.

Exclusions
While Medigap aims to cover health care services that Medicare does not offer, it does not cover everything. The supplemental policy does not pay for long-term care services, dental care, vision care, and private duty nursing care. It also does not include costs for eyeglasses and hearing aids.

Moving your loved one to an assisted living facility does not have to be costly. Lighthouse Assisted Living Homes accepts other payments options, including Medicaid (with specific restrictions and limited availability), long-term care insurance, and private funds.
